Vincent Coomans - I Cannot Comfort You

Vincent Coomans is a musician who lives and works in Belgium. Grief is the central theme in his work. In 2020 he published his first instinctively written and produced bedroomEP Can’t you see that I slowly distance myself from you. Some of the tracks, such as One Way Love, were included in some Spotify editorials such as Made in Belgium and Rustig & Mooi). In 2023 he released his first album The Great Rebuild through Illuminine Records. His music got featured in the iconic Belgian radio show Duyster (Radio 1, Studio Brussel) and Culture Club (Radio 1). In 2023 he became artist in residence in the Belgian music organisation Muziekcentrum Dranouter. As part of the residency he opened one of the stages of Dranouter Festival. In 2023 he published a track with Illuminine Catch the Night in Marble. The song was included in the list of Best songs of the year 2023 according to Duyster. A piano rendition of the song made more than one million streams on Spotify. “I wrote "I Cannot Comfort You" in the summer of 2022, when my daughter was still a baby. She was incredibly hard to get to sleep. It often took hours, and when I finally came back downstairs—after she had fallen asleep—I would usually step outside into the garden. I remember those dark, warm summer nights: it was quiet, and I would gently play my guitar to calm down and let go of the day. In those moments, this song was born—a song about comfort. I still remember how, as soon as I started playing, the crickets would wake up. It was idyllic, almost magical. So when I set out to record the song in my garden in the summer of 2024, I knew the crickets had to be part of it. But they didn’t show up. Not during the mic tests, not during the final run-throughs. Disappointed, we resigned ourselves to a version without them—until producer Jonas Bruyneel pressed the red record button. On the very first note, the crickets started singing—and they stayed for the entire song, helping shape its atmosphere.”
